Former Supreme Court justice John Major has offered a scathing assessment of the government, RCMP and CSIS for their failure to prevent the 1985 Air India bombing.
His long-awaited report into Canada’s worst mass murder lists a cascading series of errors.
And he says the Mounties remain unequipped to properly deal with prosecuting suspected terrorists.
The prime minister has issued a statement saying he hopes the report will “bring closure to those who still grieve.”
Stephen Harper adds the government will respond “positively” to the recommendations.
Meantime, the families of those who died in the bombings say the report gives them some relief.
One man, whose 21-year-old daughter was killed, says he’s grateful Major has called for compensation for the families because it was so expensive for him to fly to Ireland 20 times to attend memorials for the victims.
Two British Columbia men were acquitted of mass murder charges in the June 23, 1985, bombing of Flight 182 and a same-day bombing in Tokyo that killed two baggage handlers. Only one man has been convicted for supplying bomb parts.
