If one alderman gets his way, Memorial Drive will remain open during the Bow River Flow event.
The August 22nd festival shuts down the eastbound lanes of the major road and pushes east and west traffic onto the north side road for most of the day.
Ward 6 Alderman Joe Connelly tells 660News, he would like to see the celebration move closer to the water and not tie up traffic.
He says when the event was hosted last year, there were about two hundred people on Memorial Drive for the bicycle parade and he doesn’t see the value of inconveniencing 10,000 motorists.
Connelly adds several major construction jobs are already slowing things on Calgary roads and Memorial Drive is a much needed east-west connector.
Last year, Connelly was unsuccessful in trying to get the festival moved.
The Ward 6 representative would like to see the celebrations move closer to the river, suggesting they could be held on Prince’s Island or Bowness Park instead.
