Stampede ‘lawn’ parking nearly extinct

Residential parking has all but disappeared with the Stampede expansion into Victoria Park.

However, you’ll still find the odd flag waver out there looking to guide you into the few spots that remain.

660News talked to one man who grew up in Victoria Park in the 1970’s.

‘John’ started out in the parking game, guiding Stampeders into dad’s driveway back when a dollar got you a parking spot.

Dad’s house is now long gone thanks to Stampede expansion but John’s still down there, parking cars in a lot owned by a developer.

Now it’s $20 to park and though business is good, he misses the way things were.

“If you grew up down here, remembering the days when you were a kid, just walking  down to the Elbow River and throwing rocks and whatnot, now you’ve just got asphalt,” he says.

Progress may have changed the face of Victoria Park but, each year, Stampede still brings John back home.
