Police have hauled eight people into custody after Greenpeace activists took their anti-oil message to the Calgary Tower Tuesday morning.
It happened around 9:30 and disrupted traffic on 9th Avenue for around two hours as officers tried to get three men rappelling from the tower to come down.
They were holding a big sign protesting the oil patch and the government.
Police say the three men managed to rappel down from the tower after they used a window on the observation deck to get outside. They then chained the window shut and hoisted their banner which said “separate oil and state.”
Duty Inspector Chris Butler says they’re still working on exactly what charges the activists will face.
“Possible potential charges could be mischief, damage to property,” he says. “We’ll also be looking at the public safety related charges having to shut down 9th Avenue and use all these resources.”
Those facing charges include the three who rappelled down the tower, three more who hoisted them and two assistants on the ground.
