Alberta Federation of Labour calling on province to address wage disparity

The Alberta Federation of Labour is weighing in on numbers released by Stats Canada showing there’s still a wage gap in Canada between men and women.

Spokesperson Nancy Furlong tells 660News the gap is even wider in Alberta with the national average showing women make 71 percent of what men earn while in Alberta it’s 66 percent.

Furlong says the demand for predominantly male oil patch workers in this province is a big reason.

One of the biggest gaps is at the University of Calgary where male professors are making about $20,000 more a year than their female counterparts.

Furlong says it’s disproportionate mainly because male-dominated colleges that focus on business and the sciences pay better then the social sciences which is taught by mostly female professors.

She says government needs to put things in place to keep people aware of the gender gap.
