Police warning of bogus charity scam

Calgarians are being warned about a couple of bogus charities falsely linked to city police.

In the scam, the caller is usually a man who claims to be collecting donations for the Canadian Police Comedy Festival, or on behalf of the Calgary Police Service to help homeless kids.

The caller insists payments be made by Visa or Mastercard and a minimum donation of $25.

The Calgary Sun reports one person was even told to pony up $500 up front.

A police spokesman says both charities are fictional and warns people to be cautious.
