City firefighters get raise

An arbitrator has awarded Calgary firefighters a salary increase of nearly 11 percent.

The agreement calls for a pay increase of roughly six per cent retroactive to last year  and another five percent this year.

It comes after an arbitrator was called in when talks between negotiators for the firefighters and the city broke down in May.

The Firefighters’ Association calls the agreement fair and reasonable.

The association’s president says the contract brings Calgary firefighters closer to the salaries of their Edmonton counterparts.

The new contract will expire in four months.
