A Calgary climber is in stable condition after plunging 20 metres on Cascade Mountain in Banff National Park.
The Calgary Herald reports highly acclaimed U of C professor Dr. Jonathan Lytton was left dangling on a cliff face in his safety harness Saturday.
Aaron Beardmore with Banff National Park tells the newspaper, he credits Lytton’s expertise in placing his safety equipment for his survival.
The professor’s climbing partner pulled him to safety on a ledge and called for a chopper rescue.
Beardmore says there were plenty of spots that Lytton could have hit on his 20-metre plunge because the rock face wasn’t completely vertical.
At the scene, it appeared he had suffered a broken ankle, broken ribs, dislocated shoulder and, because his helmet was cracked, possibly a head injury.
Dr. Lytton heads the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Calgary.
