Suncor charged for environmental offences

The province has charged Suncor Energy for allegedly contravening its water runoff plan for the Voyageur Upgrader near Fort McMurray.

The charges also allege misleading information given to Alberta Environment about an incident in 2008.

That’s when storm water runoff, a mixture of rain water and dirt from the construction site, ran into the Athabasca River during the first stages of the upgrader project.

Suncor faces nine counts in all, and each carries a maximum fine of $500,000.

The company is due in court November 3rd in Fort McMurray.
