Alnoor Kassam withdraws from mayor race

The number of candidates in the running for mayor has dropped to 15.

Alnoor Kassam, the runner-up for the job in 2007, has withdrawn his name from the current race.

Despite losing by a large margin three years ago, Kassam became a household name after spending nearly $1 million dollars on his campaign. However, his candidacy ended abruptly on Friday.

He’s now throwing his support behind candidate Barb Higgins. Kassam tells 660News that he’s been impressed by everyone in the race. However, he believes Higgins would be the right choice because she would be coming from the outside.

“She’s been a reporter for 20 years,” he says. “Reporters have a critical eye, which I think is necessary at city hall.”

Kassam says he’s offering Higgins his campaign resources, including his northeast campaign office, his ground team, his expertise and experience.

Kassam adds that he still wants to remain a service to Calgary.
