New drunk driving rules could be on the way to Alberta

Blowing between 0.05 and 0.08 in a breathalyzer test could soon mean a license suspension for three days.

The Alberta government is thinking about adopting tougher drunk driving laws, similar to what’s now in place in British Columbia, according to The Calgary Sun.

If your blood alcohol level is 0.05 in B.C., drivers lose their license for 72 hours, face a fine of $600, and their vehicle could be impounded.

In Alberta, drivers are given a 24-hour suspension and a warning for the same infraction.

If your blood alcohol level is above 0.08 in either province, it is a criminal offense.

Most people 660News spoke to on Calgary streets Thursday morning were ready to throw their full support behind the idea, saying that there are too many crashes and anyone taking the risk should be removed from the road.

One man said he hoped the new rules would lead to a reduction in car insurance rates if such a law resulted in fewer crashes.
