Curiosity brings crowds to Chinook Centre

It appears Calgarians are curious about the changes to Chinook Centre, with the mall recently unveiling new retail outlets as part of its expansion.

Chinook Centre’s Paige O’Neill tells 660News, stores have been kept very busy.

“For the first five days after the expansion, we have seen over 250-thousand guests through the building,” says O’Neill.  “On average that’s about 50-thousand visitors a day, which is anywhere from about a 17 to a 10 percent increase over last year.”

O’Neill adds, the visitors to the mall aren’t just curious window shoppers, saying they’re spending money as well.  She cites the food court as an example, where some retailers have seen increases of sales between 74 and 121 percent.

On the downside, traffic has increased.  But O’Neill says volunteer firefighters in the parking lot have done a tremendous job at helping drivers find parking stalls.

Some of the big new names in the expansion include the Apple Store, Harry Rosen, Coach, Burberry and Le Creuset.
