Vehicle emissions testing could become mandatory in Alberta if two provincial MLA’s get their way.
Calgary MLA Neil Brown and Edmonton MLA Tony Vandermeer would like to see vehicles in Alberta undergo the same pollution testing already mandatory in British Columbia and Ontario.
Calgary MLA Neil Brown tells The Calgary Sun Alberta’s air quality isn’t what it used to be and he says vehicle emissions are partly to blame.
Brown says our city’s population has surpassed the one million people and that means more drivers are on the road, many of whom are behind the wheel of older cars or trucks.
Brown would like to see a bill that would force owners of vehicles 10 years or older to undergo mandatory pollution testing and thinks proof that a vehicle meets emission standards should be required before it can be registered.
In B.C. the fee for testing can cost anywhere from $23 to $45.
