The 24-year-old Calgary man accused of deliberately driving into a crowd of young people outside a bar in Olds, early Friday morning was apparently on probation.
Sources also tell the Calgary Herald, Jeffrey Kevin Leinin wasn’t even allowed to be driving when he allegedly got behind the wheel of a Ford F-250 truck and hit a group of 10 or 15 bar patrons.
18-year-old Nicholas Baier, a second-year student at Olds College, died at the scene.
At least three others were hurt, one seriously.
The accused has a lengthy criminal record for incidents involving vehicles.
Just last year, he was convicted of dangerous driving for two separate incidents in October of 2008, when he drove stolen vehicles into police cars to try to escape capture.
In 2005, Leinin was handed a two-year sentence for leading RCMP on a high speed chase near Valleyview, Alberta, also in a stolen vehicle.
He is scheduled to appear in Calgary court Monday charged with first degree murder.
