Cold spell to last a while

Winter is here to stay, at least until next week.

The first storm of the season dumped anywhere from five to 15 centimetres on parts of the city Monday night and Tuesday morning, but driving, while slower than normal has been not too bad so far.

Police are reporting around 40 crashes happened between 5:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Meteorologist David Spence says Calgary is in for light snow for the next several days, with temperatures colder than minus ten degrees Celsius lasting into the weekend.

Meanwhile, the city’s new “echelon” plowing method got its inaugural test with the first snowfall of the winter driving season.

In the new method, plows drive in a staggered formation to clear all the snow in one pass.

City Roads says it’ll make for better snow clearing.

Most people 660News spoke with Tuesday afternoon at several gas stations along 32nd Avenue NE say they were impressed with road crews and noticed a change for the better when it came to how well streets were cleared.

Only a small handful of drivers 660News surveyed on the street were disappointed, with some saying they’re waiting to see if this latest positive performance by road crews will last as the winter weather drags on.
