Crime Stoppers targets poachers

Poaching is on the rise in Kananaskis country and conservation officers hope a Crime Stoppers reenactment of two recent cases will help catch some of the offenders and deter others.

Police are reenacting a case where elk were illegally shot and killed.

They’re hoping the video will send a strong message to poachers.

Back on September 21st, a five-point elk was shot and killed in a six-point hunting zone in Bow Valley Park.

Then, October 4th, another elk was shot with a high-powered rifle in a no-hunting zone near Hwy 40.

Conservation officer Andy Rees says these are serious offences and the culprits should pay.

“If anybody knows any information, they’ve seen something in the past that didn’t look correct, by all means they should be reporting that to Crime Stoppers or to the record-a-poacher line, or contacting the parks service,” says Rees.

Poaching can result in fines of up to $100 thousand dollars under the Parks Act.
