City hall will discuss expanding recycling program

There will be more trash talking at city hall on Monday.

This time, aldermen will consider expanding the recycling program to include organic waste.

Alderman Druh Farrell will introduce a motion Monday asking for a report on how the city can expand its recycling program.

30 per cent of garbage going to dumps consists of plant and food matter.

Some communities, including Sunalta, run local organic composting bins.

Alderman Farrell would also like to investigate expanding the blue bin program to include apartments and town houses, which are currently excluded.

The city’s goal is to divert 80 per cent of waste from landfills by the year 2020.
