Clubbing auto thefts

Calgary Police and the Alberta Motor Association have joined forces to educate drivers about ways they can prevent their vehicles from being stolen.
Police are randomly distributing hundreds of steering wheel locks, also known as the “club” to drivers around the city.
The initiative has been dubbed Operation Safety Club.
Even though auto thefts are down this year over last, thieves have still made off with 53-hundred vehicles, which works out to more than a dozen a day.
Besides using devices like the club, drivers are being reminded not to leave their vehicles running, even if they are locked.
Police report about 40 per cent of the stolen vehicles they recover have their keys inside.
District # 2 Constable Jud Niven tells 660News if a thief wants something bad enough they will find a way to get it, but people shouldn’t make it easier for them either.
