Alberta’s Court of Appeal has granted new trials to two men in the 2006 downtown highrise murder of a city financier.
The court’s ruling, issued Thursday, says the trial judge made two errors and that Robert Deer and Mohamed Karim should be re-tried as a result.
Both were convicted of first degree murder by a jury in 2007 after Jack Beauchamp was found dead outside his office at Morbank Financial in January 2006.
The first trial heard the killing was over a dispute between Deer and Beauchamp, President of Morbank Financial, over a $1.2-million mortgage for an inner city duplex project that did not go ahead.
