Texting Crime Tips

If you witness a crime, the Calgary Police can now be reached at your finger tips.
Text messaging is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to alert local Crimestoppers about how to find the bad guys.
The messages are routed through a software program that removes the phone number, allowing people to still remain anonymous.
Since it’s launch last year, Executive Director Terry Hathaway tells 660News, at least one tip has managed to solve a case.
As the city marks January with “Crimestoppers Awareness Month,” the organization also has other plans over the coming year to increase their accessibility and presence.
Hathaway says they hope to look into things like social media in 2011.
“You’ll also see us expanding our borders so to speak, maybe into some of the smaller borders around Calgary,” he explains. “Because as we push crime out of the city it has to go somewhere.”
It’s part of their role he says to get out into the community and promote the organization.
