Students unveil hovercraft at new Career and Technology Centre

Students from the Calgary Board of Education’s new Career and Technology Centre unveiled their final project on Monday.
The pre-engineering class spent the entire first semester of the new CBE program building a hovercraft and took it out for a spin for all to see.
The vehicle is a crude-looking structure, 3 by 6 feet in size and is designed to support a 150lb person and travels at about walking speed.
CBE spokesperson Merla Bolender tells 660News, it is the culmination of alot of hard work as students have been coming to the centre all semester either in the morning or afternoon, 4 days a week.
She says building the hovercraft involved a number of subjects to teach the engineering basics of problem solving.
The centre opened in September of 2010 and gives students at Ernest Manning High School the chance to earn credentials in pre-engineering, auto body, welding and hairstyling while completing their high school diploma.
The programs are designed to help students develop skills that they can apply in their daily lives while preparing for entry into the workplace or for further learning opportunities.
