The Mounties have confirmed that Steve Boucher’s son is a member of the force but won’t say where he is stationed or how long he has been on the payroll.
62-year-old Steve Boucher was shot and killed by RCMP officers in Canmore Monday afternoon after he emerged from a vehicle waving what turned out to be a fake gun.
Boucher was the suspect in a three armed robberies that were committed over a 72-hour period before his vehicle was boxed in, ending a brief pursuit.
The Calgary Herald reports a check of city court records indicates Boucher did not have a criminal record.
A former roommate, Alfredo Castillo, tells The Calgary Sun he talked with Boucher a few days before the shooting.
Castillo says Boucher appeared happy and was talking about visiting a girlfriend in the Philippines.
Guy Beaudoin, Boucher’s foreman a few years ago, says the former Quebec resident was a good worker but was let go when the quality of his work started to suffer because of failing eyesight.
Some others in Canmore suggest tough economic conditions played a part in the tragic end to the handyman’s life.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting to determine if the actions of the officers involved were justified.
The investigation could take up to nine months to complete.
