New background checks hamper charities

A new way of doing police background checks is driving away volunteers for Alberta charities.
Since July, police have been starting their checks using gender and birthday as their main search terms, instead of a person’s name.
It’s meant to make sure convicted sex offenders who change their name don’t slip through the cracks.
But the Executive Director of Volunteer Alberta tells The Calgary Herald some new recruits for charities that require checks are quitting before they’re done.
That’s because the checks are now taking up to two months to finish, as police go through the longer list of names that comes out every time they do a search under the new rules.
