The developer of the tallest office building project in Canada outside of Toronto has dusted off plans to build a second tower.
Matthews Southwest has been given a development permit to build a 12-storey office complex that will incorporate the facade of the old York Hotel.
The project was shelved back in 2009, when the economy soured during the recession.
The executive vice-president of real estate firm CB Richard Ellis tells 660News the project is a vote of confidence for the local economy.
Greg Kwong says there is also talk that Enbridge will be the building’s major tenant when it opens in a couple of years.
Cenovus is expected to start moving into the 59-storey Bow Building later this year, with Encana taking up occupancy in the first quarter of 2012.
A Plus 15 walkway will link the two towers.
The president and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Adam Legge, says the opening of the Bow Building will help breathe new life into the east end of the core.
Legge says the only thing lacking in the downtown is more residential development, which he hopes will happen in the coming years.
