Haggis a big hit in Calgary

Many will be celebrating Robbie Burns Tuesday, with haggis as the traditional meal.

Bon Ton Meats, Greg Keller tells 660News the dish is catching on.

“Don’t believe all the wives tales, that it’s a bunch of garbage stuffed in there, it’s not,” says Keller. “People should have some fun with it, no harm, no foul type of thing,”

He says January is usually a slow month for the meat market, but things pick-up in the week leading up to Robbie Burns Day.

In the last seven days, he estimates he’s sold 1500 pounds of the Scottish delicacy.

The dish can best be described as a sausage or savoury pudding, cooked inside a cow or sheep’s stomach.

“You know, we get new staff in here every year, when we’re making it and it’s quite comical because we tell them they have to try it,” he says. “And they’re all pleasantly surprised, because they say, ‘that’s not bad’.”

Keller adds, “The tradition is, you have a little bit of scotch, you have some friends over and you have some fun,”he says.”For the most part, it’s a fun day!”
