Canadians are stampeding to western Canada

It’s another sign the economic recovery is well underway.

A special report compiled by TD Economics shows interprovincial migration last year was at its highest level since 1998.

One per cent of the population, or 337,000 Canadians, moved within the country in 2010.

British Columbia was the destination of choice, followed by Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Alberta and B.C. have been consistent net recipients since 2003, with Saskatchewan joining the club in 2007.

The author of the report, TD Senior Economist Pascal Gauthier tells 660News the numbers are more proof that the recession is over and resource rich economies are where the action is at.

Gauthier says the resurgence in migration is also a sign that the Canadian real estate market is starting to stabilize.  He says that’s because it’s hard to relocate if you can’t sell your house.

The western provinces will be on the positive side of the net migration equation for the next few years.

Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba will be on the negative side.
