As Canada’s MP’s go back to work on Parliament Hill, Calgary’s Chamber of Commerce has delivered pre-budget recommendations it would like to see in the federal budget.
Finance Minister Jim Flaherty doesn’t deliver the platform until March, but the Chamber’s Director of Policy and Government Affairs Ben Brunnen tells 660News, by enacting three bold steps the government can help bolster Canada’s productivity.
By continuing with corporate tax cuts, reforming E.I. and committing to a restraint on spending and deficit reduction, we can ensure that the international world knows that Canada is a great place to invest.
“Cutting corporate taxes is encouraging businesses to reinvest, create wealth, create jobs, there’s no loss of revenues to the federal government and there’s increases to economic activity,” says Brunnen.
He adds, reforms to Employment Insurance are also critical because they are a lifeline to workers during tough economic times.
Brunnen says with the recession behind us and economic growth on the horizon, it’s time to ensure that we have a great 2011.
And if we head to an election before the budget, he says the message stays the same for all parties.
“We’d like to see steps taken by the federal government to enhance our productivity and position in a manner that helps Canadian business compete internationally,” he says.
We are in an enviable place compared to the rest of the world and he says it’s time to show the world that we are open for business.
