Chinese New Year in Calgary

Chinese communities around the world are ushering in the Year of the Rabbit Thursday with Chinese New Year celebrations.

Calgary’s Chinatown community spokesperson Markus Cheung says much of it revolves around food, including a traditional Chinese carrot cake.

At dinner, parents and grandparents give out red packets to children. The money inside is said to suppress evil spirits.

Everyone is encouraged to come down to Chinatown on Thursday to see the colourful dragon and lion dances, which can include dozens of people carrying stunning 100-foot displays through the streets.

Restaurants are specially decorated and serve traditional Chinese delicacies.

The local celebrations will also include a fair at Dragon City Hall this weekend.
