Pathologist testifies in kids’ deaths

The trial of a Calgary dad accused of killing his two young children, and attempting to kill his wife, continued in a city courtroom Wednesday.
The day’s testimony included that of a medical examiner who reviewed the autopsies of 13-year old Jason Louie and his nine-year old sister Jane.
Dr. Anny Sauvageau told the court the cause of death in the case of Jason was ligature strangulation, with patterns on the boy’s neck consistent with that of a nylon rope.
However, she testified Jane’s cause of death was not as clear because there were no injuries consistent with strangulation. Despite that, she told court she could not rule out strangulation as the cause of death.
The forensic pathologist said smothering is another possible cause of Jane’s death and added that, usually, a girl of her age, if awake, would’ve put up a struggle.
Sauvageau said the autopsy showed no signs that such a struggle occurred.
“I am not able to establish a firm cause of death for this little girl,” said Sauvageau.
