Pothole party to continue indefinitely

The weather variations we’ve seen in Calgary this winter have inflicted the typical winter-time damage to city roads. Despite the fact there are some really bad spots, there’s not a lot the city can do to fix them on anything more than a temporary basis.
Stephen Tauro with City Roads tells 660News they can improve the minor potholes with a cold mix, but it’s only a band-aid solution.
“Basically it fills the hole and it allows for some bondage to the surface,” says Tauro. “It does stay in place, but over time if there is a lot of thawing and a lot of freezing, it will eventually come out again.”
For the major trouble spots though, we’re out of luck until spring.
“It will only cause more problems if we put it” (patching compound) “in and it comes out,” says Tauro. “If there are minor repairs, we’ll address those. But the major overlay program will happen in the summer.”
Eastbound McKnight Boulevard, just before 12th Street Northeast, is one of the worst spots in the city, with major frost heaves. Right now, all drivers can really do is slow down.
