Theo Fleury memoir hits the stage

Puckheads and theatre lovers caught a glimpse of a ”work-in-progress,” when Alberta Theatre Projects held a staged version of a local hockey player’s story Saturday.
It’s based on the bestselling book called “Playing with Fire: the Theo Fleury Story” and was staged at the Big Secret Theatre.
Fleury’s life story includes being a rookie on the Flames Stanley Cup-winning 1989 team, as well as being sexually abused as a teen and its toll.
Fleury tells 660News, the new interpretation of his book helps his story reach a wider audience and is another vehicle to discuss the issue of sexual abuse.
“Obviously the book has done incredibly well, I think it’s important to keep spreading the message, and the play is just another form and a different way to interpret and get the message out there,” he says.
ATP commissioned the project and held a week-long workshop in the summer of 2010, according to the Calgary Herald.
After Saturday night’s reading, there will be script revisions with an eye to possible full production in 2012.
The play was adapted and written from the memoir Fleury co-wrote with Kirstie McLellan Day.
