Canada is the world’s most plugged-in nation

Canadians spend more time online than anyone else in the world.

A report by the measurement firm ComScore finds that Canadians spent 43.5 hours online a month in the fourth quarter of 2010.

That’s nearly double the worldwide average and eight hours more than users in the U.S., the globe’s second-most plugged-in nation.

Older Canadians, who were once slower to embrace the web, are now online in much greater numbers and driving Internet growth in Canada.

Canada’s web population grew about two per cent in the last year to nearly 25 million users.

Much of that was driven by a 12 per cent growth spurt in the number of users aged 55 and older.

Several Calgary surfers 660News spoke with Wednesday morning said they could understand why Canadian web use is so high.

“We’re suffering through winters for months and months on end every year,” Scott jokes. “You have to do something.”

Others say they spend more time on the computer at work than they would like, and keep it turned off at home as much as possible.
