Police prepare for rally

The city’s hate crimes investigator is getting ready for what could be a tense stand-off between white supremacists and anti-racist activists at a rally in Calgary later this month.
The hate crimes post has only been active since September.
Sgt. Bill Dodd with the Police Diversity Section tells 660News the city’s new hate crimes investigator will be busy educating Calgary police officers, so they’ll know what they have to do at the rally if something bad happens.
“The first people on the scene are going to be our frontline members,” he says. “So that’s why we need to educate our front line members to be aware of what these are so that they can properly recognize if these crimes were hate motivated and that they can then properly accept the resources and the investigative support that our hate crimes investigator would provide them.”
Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver and Ottawa also have dedicated hate crime units.
Calgary police are looking at whether more investigators need to be added to our force.
