After years of debate over the future of the Green Line LRT through downtown Calgary, the city’s executive committee has selected a preferred route for the long awaited transit project.

The chosen option is a surface level alignment running along 10 ave. S.W. and 2 St. S.W.

Unlike the two other proposed routes that would include elevated track sections, the alignment remains at street level and fits within the project’s current budget.

Mayor Jeromy Farkas says the province and Ottawa are open to funding the route selection and it’s one the city can afford.

Supporters of the decision say the route offers a practical path forward for a project that has faced years of delays, rising costs, and uncertainty.

However, there’s been various criticism of the route, including over the Danielle Smith government’s opposition to an underground route.

There are also concerns with ridership projections, as the chosen route is expected to attract the fewest riders of the three proposals.

Next steps are expected to be outlined as the project moves into the next phase.
