Calgary doctor says he was muzzled

A Calgary doctor says he has proof the province is trying to muzzle physicians who speak-out against how the health care system is being run.

Dr. Lloyd Maybaum says he was told he would lose his job if he didn’t cancel a campaign to save a psychiatric wing in the new south Calgary hospital.

In 2008, Dr. Maybaum tried to rally colleagues to save the psych wing after funding was pulled.

One of his emails was leaked, and then, according to The Calgary Herald, Dr. Maybaum says he received a letter threatening him.

This case is coming to light amid calls for a full public inquiry into how Alberta’s health care system is run.

The Stelmach government is still only willing to endorse a private Health Quality Council Review.
