It’s one of the most famous moments in Canadian history, even though it took place in the Luzniki Ice Palace in Moscow, Russia, on September 28th, 1972.
Saturday, hockey fans from Calgary and area will have a chance to get up close and personal with the man who authored that moment: Paul Henderson. A member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, Henderson scored the game-winning and series clinching goal in the 8th and final game of the 1972 Summit Series between Canadian NHLers and the Soviet Union’s “amateurs.”
Henderson is appearing at the Father David Bauer/Norma Bush arenas, along with the jersey and gloves he wore when he scored his historic goal with 34 seconds left in Game 8, giving Canada a 6-5 win.
The display is open to the public from 1pm to 5pm. Henderson, who’s touring the country with the exhibit, will be on hand from 2pm to 4pm.
