A different kind of rally is swinging by the Alberta Legislature as the National Allied Golf Association stages a golf awareness day.
Golf is played by more Canadians than hockey.
More than 750,000 Albertans are among roughly six million Canadians who play golf each year.
Dunc Mills with NAGA says Alberta’s golf industry chips in more than $1.9-billion a year into the provincial economy, employing 50,000 people.
Mills says the industry not only wants to raise awareness about the game’s economic importance, but its impact on the environment.
He says thanks to improved environmental practices, golf course operators are using less water and pesticides to maintain their greens and fairways.
Golf courses in and around Calgary hope to open within the next couple of weeks, weather permitting.
