Petition for IVF coverage in Alberta

Couples who can’t have children without the help of in vitro fertilization are having to pay tens of thousands of dollars, that many of them can’t afford, just for the chance at a child.
It’s something a Calgary organization is trying to change.
Tim Halpen with Generations of Hope tells 660News, having the government fund infertility treatments would just make sense.
“The point we’d like to drive home is that this is really a morally right thing to do, people deserve the right to have a chance at a family,” says Halpen.
On top of that, he says, it would make sense economically by reducing the number of multiple pregnancies.
The organization is hoping a higher profile through Canadian Infertility Awareness Week, underway now, will help drive supporters to sign a petition which will be headed to the legislature in the fall.
The group’s petition states:
“In countries around the world that fund fertility treatments it has been proven that public funding actually saves money by reducing the incidence of complicated and expensive multiple pregnancies and improving medical outcomes for both the mother and the babies. Assisting Albertans is therefore not only the right thing to do but also it is the logical and smart thing to do.”
