Accused baby killer to undergo psychiatric tests

A young Calgary mother, accused of killing her own baby, will undergo tests to see if she was of sound mind during the alleged crime.

Shelby Herchak was taken into custody and charged with second degree murder after her 26-day-old son, Daniel, died last summer of blunt force trauma.

The 19-year-old will undergo a 30-day assessment to determine if she qualifies for the lesser charge of infanticide, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Herchak is expected in court again on June 29th.
