CBE meeting to decide fee structure for transit

The Calgary Board of Education is heading into another meeting on Tuesday to decide how they’ll make up a $8.8 million budget shortfall for transit.

The CBE says they’re considering three options.  One is to leave the fees as they are and use instructional dollars to manage the shortfall.

Another is to increase the fees enough to not have to borrow from instructional money.

The CBE’s Calvin Davies says they’re learning towards a happy medium, called the “partial cost recovery option”, which would mean fees would go up a little bit, and they’d have to dip into instructional funding a little bit too.

Under this option, there would be a fee increase of just under 10 per cent for kindergarten and high school students.

Those who take charter buses, like kids in grades 1-9 and those with special needs, will see a fee jump of nearly 50 per cent.
