Political parting gift raises concerns

Conservative leadership candidates are calling for rules surrounding constituency spending after an exiting MLA was given thousands of dollars as a farewell gift.

The Airdrie-Chestermere Conservative Constituency Association gave former MLA Carol Heley $3,000 after she told the board in 2008 she wouldn’t be running for re-election.

Haley tells The Calgary Herald she accepted the money in lieu of an equally-valued trip she was offered by the association.

Haley is now Premier Ed Stelmach’s deputy chief of staff.
