It is six years down the road, but a 15 member volunteer committee has begun planning Canada’s 150th birthday celebration.
Called imagiNATION 150, the group hopes to recreate some of the ideas and spirit that accompanied the nation-wide celebrations in 1967 during our centenary.
Heading up the committee is Colin Jackson, a former President of the Epcor Centre for Performing Arts. He tells the Calgary Herald, he sees Calgary offering the nation leadership about what Canada can be in the future. He adds in 1967, the people — more so than government — organized celebrations and initiatives.
A former chancellor at the University of Calgary, Jack Perraton, hopes the sesquicentennial marks a move and celebration towards better environmental practices, including preservation of water and renewable resources.
Although the 150th birthday celebrations won’t be until 2017, imaginNATION 150 is launching its website today at www.i150.ca.
