Put your 4×4 to good use with a rough ride to the windswept Ghost River Valley.
Peer at the summit of Black Rock Mountain, while gazing over the front range peaks, forested foothills and prairies.
The valley is less than an hour west of Calgary. Drive 18 km west on the Trans-Canada highway, 13 km north on Highway 22 to Cochrane, and 13 km west on Highway 1A.
Pass grassy foothills through the tiny communities of Benchlands and Waiparous, making sure to stop for a fantastic view of the peaks of Palliser Range, which straddles the Banff National Park boundary.
The next great view on the way is a 16 km hilltop parking area where you’ll find Phantom Craig; a limestone rock and ice climbing cliff.
While in Ghost River Valley, you can always stop for a 5 km hike at Black Rock and enjoy a tremendous view of Devil’s Head and the Upper Ghost Valley.
It’s less then 90 km away, and you will get a feeling of peace and tranquility, unlike the wilderness of Banff or Lake Louise.
