Fatal crash causes six hour Deerfoot closure

One person is dead after a single vehicle collision on northbound Deerfoot Trail overnight.

Just before 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning, the car crashed into a light pole along the highway causing the vehicle to shatter into a few pieces.

Duty Inspector Rob Williams told 660News, police believe speed was definitely a factor in the crash but alcohol has not yet been ruled out as an additional cause.

The wreck forced a major road closure on northbound Deerfoot Trail between Mcknight Boulevard and 64th Ave but it reopened later in the morning.

The lone occupant and driver died instantly due to the impact of the collision.
