Low-income Calgarians could pay less to ride transit

Calgarians living below the poverty line could pay less to ride the bus and LRT.
The idea comes as transit is unable to meet its financial obligation of funding 55 per cent of its $277 million in operating costs through fares and other revenue.
Alderman Gord Lowe tells 660News, they need to reconsider fares for every age group including that for seniors and low-income users.
A series of options is on the table to make up the shortfall, but aldermen at a committee meetin g on Wednesday didn’t support a hike on discounted passes for seniors and the poor.
Calgarians living below the poverty line pay $40 a month and seniors pay $35 a year and that hasn’t changed since 1995.
Final decisions on changes to transit fares won’t be made until budget deliberations in November.
