Possible bomb threat in SE

Police have blocked off the area surround 8th Avenue between 44th and 47th Streets due to a possible bomb threat at the East Calgary Health Centre.
Just before 10:00am Friday morning a suspicious looking device was found in front of the facility and police immediately shut down the entire block to investigate the bomb threat.
Explosive experts removed a device which resembled a pipe bomb for closer inspection and Duty Inspector Chris Butler says it measured seven inches long and two inches in diameter.
“A general rule of thumb is we’re going to rope off an area that will satisfy us so if the device does detinate, there’s going to be a minimum of harm to any people in the area,” said Butler. “So we did an evacuation of that.”
Butler adds that if device turns out to be authentic an investigation will take place.
Police remain on scene investigating.
