A five year old Calgary boy has drowned while visiting Sylvan Lake.
It happened Monday evening at the summer village of Norglenwold, which is located on the lake’s southwest shore, about 135 kilometres northwest of Calgary.
Emergency crews attempted CPR on the child who was then taken to the Red Deer hospital in critical condition but later died.
His name is not being released at the request of the family.
In an unprecedented move, a Calgary HAWCS helicopter was deployed to help the boy’s father race to his son’s side.
Kevin Brookwell with the Calgary Police Service tells 660News officers felt it was the right thing to do considering the child’s grave condition.
“Rather than risk the hour and a half to drive up there plus the transferring back and forth between police vehicles, we went and picked up the father and flew him directly to Red Deer Hospital and then immediately returned back to the city,” says Brookwell.
It’s not known what led to the boy’s drowning, though RCMP say the death does not appear suspicious at this point.
RCMP Sergeant Patrick Webb tells 660News an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
