Charges laid in joyride

Calgary police have laid 18 charges against a man allegedly part of a joyride in stolen vehicles, that took place just hours before Thursday morning’s police shooting.
Police began following two stolen vehicles that were being driving erratically across the northside of the city around 11 p.m. Wednesday eventually using spike belts in an attempt to stop them.
Ryan William Witvoet allegedly evaded police and drove dangerously along several areas in north Calgary including 16th Avenue until being stopped near University Drive in the northwest.
Police say Witvoet refused to leave the truck and was eventually shot by a rubber bullet gun.
The 27-year-old is facing a number of charges, including dangerous driving and flight from a peace officer.
He’s set to appear in court on Monday.
