New program to house kids

The Calgary Homeless Foundation is ushering in a new initiative to get kids off the street.
President Tim Richter says public services need to be broadened and coordinated more efficiently to ensure no one falls into homelessness.
Richter says the plan also aims to get more housing and support for vulnerable kids.
The collaborative planning is outstanding in itself. “There’s at least 21 youth serving agencies that were around the table helping us pull this together as well as some of the key funders in homelessness services including the United Way,” he says.
The young people themselves impacted by homelessness were also involved in the planning.
As many as 2,000 people under the age of 24 do not have a permanent home in our city.
The real number of homeless kids could be higher since young people will often bounce from sleeping on a friend’s couch to sleeping outside.
