Test drive the future

Imagine a car that cost a penny per kilometre to drive, reaches top speeds of 130 kilometres per hour, and needs no oil changes or tune-ups.

You don’t need to use your imagination if you check out Mitsubishi’s new electric car at A-M-A locations throughout Calgary.

660’s Dave will took a “Mitsubishi i MiEV” out for a test drive and says it looks a bit like a smart car, only bigger.

It’s one of only two production vehicles touring the world but more will be rolled out in local showrooms in the fall.

The Alberta Motor Association’s Randy Loyk says Albertans are interested.  “It’s a fun little vehicle to drive, of course.  The first thing you notice when you are driving in an urban setting is how quiet the vehicle is and how noisy and smelly everything is around you,” said Loyk.

Loyk expects this car to retail somewhere around $25,000.  The downsides to the vehicle are it will run out of juice if it exceeds 130 km/hour and its performance is cut in half in cold weather.
